5 DAYS AGO - What I have relearned after all MWC teams have finished in Round 1Read-more-at: https://ricksfalconreview.blogspot.com (scroll down for past posts)It's Saturday Morning and we find the MWC with 2 teams remaining in the NCAA tournament and UNLV still alive in the NIT. What I now still hold to be true, all these teams and their opponents are there because of one word: Maturity. And that one word has so many different meanings. The actual definition is " the quality or state of being mature or in full development". For basketball, that has many elements that I would like to discuss and how it relates to our Air Force Falcons.First physically, to mature, simply mean growing to your final composition which comes with age. That is a basic concept we see in life with height, weight, strength and dexterity. I look around at all NCAA athletes (to include our cadet student athletes) and see that varying physical maturity and am amazed at the Collapse

AF was held cutting all the time.Bottom line while we had 3 in double figures (Becker and Taylor 14pts each and Petraitis 13pts) but only 6 points off the bench. I wonder what the rushing averages vs passing of their opponents throughout the season, which will affect that rushing defense number. Note they were missing 2 defensive linemen due to the portal who opted not to play which I do not understand)- It's more than one thing, but the 5 players out for injuries in our 4 losses were key.GO FALCONS- Rick'77More on Collapse

But that did not happen as they were not selected but did have a fantastic run to the semi-finals of the NIT. I blame circumstances and HC Bzzzzzdelic (Jeff Bezdelik -He who should not be named) for the meltdown at the end and credit to our players for a great recovery after a severe road block that almost derailed a fantastic season. We were ranked 13th in the nation and had beaten CSU at home then someone stole a lugnut off one of the wheels of the bus. A road game loss by 10 points occurred at UNLV (we were tied for 2nd in the MWC with them) after only making 11-39 3's (didn't go inside and therefore died by the 3 on a poor shooting night). As I have stated elsewhere, this is a very good conference especially this season, with projection of possibly 5 teams in the NCAA tournament. And to see the parity in the conference, just look at the current standings with 4 teams tied for first place, 1 team 1 game back and then another team only 1.5 games back of first place. Wow, indeed a tough conference. Impressed with their defense against what is normally a very good BYU team, SH lost 14-0 at BYU. Having played them for many years I know how tough BYU can be (and not my favorite fan base). Don't know if they 'thought' they could overlook them but SH definitely showed them they were there to play and playing for blood. I'm excited for this matchup come Saturday.
SH will be facing an experienced AF team on both sides of the ball but a new QB in only his 2nd game. With that said, QB Larrier (MWC 200m track champion 2 x years in a row) is a senior as are the #2 and #3 QBs so they all know the system and it's intricacies. I think the game will be similar to BYU in that who wins the trenches will be the team with the advantage. We have a very experienced front OL so it will be interesting to see how we can Collapse

The Air Force men went 0-2 with an ugly loss at SJSU while our Lady Falcons went 1-1 on the week with a would'a, could'a, should'a loss and a home win. Now the schedule gets tougher for both teams especially for the women. AF women's basketball went on the road to face Boise State a team they have not beat on the road forever losing 60-55. They were up by 9 in the 2nd quarter and played with a lead or back and forth until late in the game. A few missed layups and free throws and the game was in the bag for BSU. But the team did not keep their heads down long, playing an inspired game at home Collapse
